Course Information

The course meets for a total of 37.5 contact hours: 5 meetings, each lasting 8 hours, with half an hour scheduled for lunch.

A group critique will be held on each of the first four days of class at approximately 2 PM. Participants may choose to present works to the group, view and respond to other students' work, or not join in at all but continue to work on their own.

At our final meeting on August 21, participants will turn in a portfolio of all projects, completed. The instructor will photograph each work for reference in calculating final grades and return portfolios to the participants before the final class is dismissed.

Attendance is mandatory. In the event of an unplanned absence, it is the responsibility of the student to complete all missed work, dependent upon the discretion of the instructor.

Participants are required to turn in all projects completed on the final day of class.

The school is open on Mondays and Wednesdays from 8:30 AM to 9:30 PM; on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 8:30 AM to 5 PM; and closed on weekends. DESCRIPTION:

This course will focus on the careers and artworks of four women artists: Joan Mitchell, Joan Snyder, Mary Frank and Elizabeth Murray. The instructor will give a biographical presentation on each artist, then the class will have practice sessions working with each artist's particular stylistic considerations and art materials (Mitchell: landscape-inspired abstraction using a palette knife; Snyder: journalistic collage incorporating natural textures; Frank: gestural drawing in response to the figure; Murray: brightly colored, shape-oriented abstraction inspired by everyday objects). After this preparation, participants will design and create a project inspired by each artist's work. This course will provide ideas and information for classroom projects in studio art and art history, as well as inspired students in developing their own personal art practice. This is the second class in the "Inspired by Women Artists" series. As different artists and techniques are explored from the first class, there is no prerequisite for this course.

OBJECTIVES:

Participants will become familiar with the lives and careers of four influential female artists.

Participants will get ideas for classroom art projects based on the artwork of these four artists.

Participants will create artworks of personal expression inspired by the styles and materials of these four artists.

Participants will gain practice in working with a variety of art materials and styles.

Participants will analyze a diverse range of artworks.

Participants will articulate their individual aesthetic preferences and intentions.
